This course uses case studies to reinforce key points about perioperative management of patients who are receiving anticoagulant therapy.
- To identify procedure and minor surgery types in which patients’ anticoagulants can be safely continued, without interruption.
- To be able to manage the perioperative interruption and resumption of Vitamin K antagonists (VKA) in patients with either atrial fibrillation (AF), a mechanical heart valve (MHV) or venous thromboembolism (VTE) who require an elective surgery/procedure.
- To identify VKA-treated patients who need heparin bridging during VKA interruption and to be able to administer heparin bridging in a safe manner according to the latest scientific evidence.
- To be able to manage the perioperative interruption and resumption of Direct Oral Anticoagulants (DOACs) in patients who require an elective surgery/procedure.
- To identify when patients need perioperative heparin bridging.
- To identify when patients need perioperative coagulation testing.
- To be able to manage patients on VKAs or DOACs who need an urgent surgery/procedure.
