This section of the ISTH Clinical Core Curriculum deals with aspects of antithrombotic agents to attain a level of proficiency to enable them to practice independently as specialists in the field.

Apply their understanding of the mechanisms of action and therapeutic indications for anticoagulant agents in management of individuals who require these medications
Manage patients receiving anticoagulants, including advice on duration and intensity and interactions with other medications
Interpret tests for anticoagulant control (e.g. INR, aPTT, anti-Xa levels, thrombin clotting time)
Manage anticoagulation and antiplatelet therapy in association with invasive procedures
Manage patients with anticoagulant-associated bleeding
Manage patients on antiplatelet agents, including aspirin, dipyridamole, thienopyridrine derivatives and glycoprotein IIb/IIIa inhibitors
Manage patients on fibrinolytic drugs, including streptokinase, urokinase, t-PA
